Fourth of July BBQ - Ojai, CA

Happy 236th Birthday to the United States of America!

We spent our 4th of July morning working horses, like we do most holidays. The weather was beautiful so we decided to fire up the BBQ and invite some friends over to have a good time. Any chance for Melissa Good Taste to have host a food fest is a good day!

This is Pete. He shows cutting horses with us. He always spoils me with deliveries of Tomorrow's Organics produce. It is always a bag of something ripe and wonderful.

Today he brought cantaloupe. Isn't it beautiful? It was so ripe and juicy. Thanks Pete!

These are two were also part of the early party crew. On the left is Bev, she is Scott Good Taste's mom and a very important member of Scott Weis Cutting Horses. She feeds the supplements, looks after the ranch and is always running errands for us. On the right is Pete's wife Lisa. She too rides cutting horses with us and is a joy to be around.

You guys know Kat, she brought the good stuff: Tri-Tip and wine. All very important things. I had to man the barbecue for Scott when he exited the party to go feed the horses. I thought I did a pretty good job with the sausages, see below.

Hillshire Farms Gourmet Sausages in Sweet Italian and Jalapeno Beef got the party started! I usually never eat sausage unless it is served up like this at a party. I often wonder why because I wolf them down!

Krissi showed up as the most patriotic guest. From her flip flops, nails, shirt and sunglasses she was reppin' the Red, White and Blue!

Amanda is a another vital part of our cutting horse crew. She brought her boyfriend Matt, this is the first time i met him and I was so jealous of his car. A red '69 Camaro that was all tricked out. Fancy!

These two were on a visit to work Justin's horses on cattle so they stayed with us to enjoy the good food and weather.

Scott made it back to the party after feeding and took his spot back at the grill. It took almst no time flat before all the food was ready and we were set to eat!

Grilled Lobster Tails are becoming my favorite thing ever. They are tricky to get our of their shell but it is worth the struggle once you take a bite. I just wished they were bigger and more of them! Diva alert.

The tri-tip rest and all ready to be served.

Garlic bread, perfect for dipping into the beans!

My famous "Watermelon Salad" has been getting rave reviews around here. Watermelon cubes, feta cheese, mint, basil, olive oil and salt & pepper. Easy, refreshing and something different!

Corn and Black Bean Salad is another dish that I could throw together and let chill in the refrigerator. It usually is a crowd pleaser when served with tri-tip.

Potato Salad that I wish had some more kick to it. I should have used more hot sauce! Or red peppers...

Beans, ranch style. Nothing fancy but they sure tasted good!

My plate.

Scott's plate.

Last but not least Morgan, also on Team Weis Cutting Horses, made a beautifully flag decorated Tres Leches cake. It was so moist and delicious. I couldn't think a better ending to a meal.
